Types Of Mobility Scooters

Mobility Scooters are sorted into two different classes (Based upon speed and restrictions). They can also be arranged into different catagories depending on certain factors...(i.e travel mobility scooters, heavy duty mobility scooters, four wheel mobility scooters and three wheel mobility scooters.)

Scooter Classing

There are two main classes of scooter:

Class 2:  Scooters in this class are to be used on the pavement only and have a maximum speed of 4mph.

Class 3:  These scooters may travel on the road and have a maximum speed of 8mph. They may travel on the pavement when fitted with a restrictor switch that limits the speed to 4mph.

Travel mobility scooters

Also known as; portable scooters, car boot scooters, transportable scooters.

These Travel Mobility scooters are designed for travel and compact storage, just as their name implies. Travel mobility scooters disassemble into a number of pieces for easy transport in the boot of most cars. These Travel mobility scooters are easy to lift into the boot with the heaviest parts weighing as little as 22 pounds. Travel mobility scooters will normally have sealed batteries which make them safe to take on aeroplanes.

Three Wheeled Mobility Scooters

Also known as; Tri wheel scooters, 3 wheel mobility scooters, .

Three Wheeled Mobility Scooters have more manoeuvrability than the travel mobility scootersas the single front wheel provides a tight turning circle, making them easier to use around the home. They are the perfect choice for users whose mobility needs demand a scooter that can be used both indoors and out. These Three Wheeled Mobility Scooters can usually carry a maximum weight up to around 350 pounds and have features such as front and rear lights, and an adjustable tiller, there is a mobility scooter that suits almost every user in this category.

Four Wheeled Mobility Scooters

Also known as; All terrain scooters, Off road scooters.

These Four Wheeled Mobility Scooters are designed for outdoor use and as well as being able to tackle more rugged terrains than the three wheel or travel scooters, these Four Wheeled Mobility Scooters still provide maximum stability. A Four Wheeled Mobility Scooter could be considered as the ultimate scooter. On the larger models, the higher ground clearance and bigger tires make these a great choice for off-road travel, and some go as fast as 10 mph. The turning radius is not as tight as Three Wheeled or travel mobility scooters, so the full-size models are not the best choice for indoor usage.
